Milford Art Group
The Milford Art Group was formed approximately thirty years ago for local artists to meet, share their knowledge and expertise.
The Group meets on the first Thursday of each month in Milford Church Hall, Church Hill, Milford on Sea at 2.15pm. Visitors are most welcome. (Kindly note this is not to be used as a postal address.)
Our demonstrators are professional artists who cover all painting media: watercolour, acrylic, pastel and oil. They are filmed and relayed to a large screen television so that the entire audience can see. They can be very inspirational, with many of our members keen to try out these observed new techniques as soon as they return home. Sadly, we don't have tuition facilities on site.
Due to popular demand our membership has increased to 65 full members and 30 associates.
At the end of July we hold our Summer Exhibition which lasts for two weeks.
Thursday October 3rd at 2.15pm.
All Saints Church Hall, Church Hill, Milford on Sea, Hampshire. SO41 0SQ.
Tony is an award winning caricature artist based in Brighton. He has drawn caricatures professionally for over 12 years and he strives to produce the finest caricature commissions in the country.
He sets great store by keeping a subject's likeness, and was the winner of the 2011 European Caricature Likeness Award (Voted for by 42 professional caricaturists at the Girona Caricature Convention).
He believes that an accurate and well crafted caricature should be funny yet be more accurate than the subject's own reflection - and he maintains that anyone who tells you a caricature isn't supposed to look like the subject has missed the point or doesn't possess the skill required!
From 27th July to 10th August 2019, we will be exhibiting members work at All Saints Church Hall. Opening times: Daily 10am to 5.30pm, Sundays 11am to 5.30pm and Saturday 10th August 10am to 4pm. Admission and parking free. Refreshments available.
Artist Gillian Key dropped into the exhibition on Saturday so we took the opportunity of capturing her with her painting "Life on the Green" which won best in show at the Private View.
Alison Bolton very kindly stepped in to critique members work prior to the Summer Exhibition. Her clear and insightful, constructive criticisms were greatly appreciated with a number of the artists agreeing that the tiny change advocated would make all the difference.
On a sunny afternoon Jo Louca treated us to a sunny garden landscape painting absolutely full of colour and reacting intuitively to the paint and paper.
We had another captivating demonstration yesterday afternoon in Milford. The skillful watercolourist, Jake Winkle, took us through two paintings, one of Old Harry Rocks and the other of a cheetah at full pace. You can see and feel the movement. Jake passed on lots of tips and had an excellent array of merchandise including cards, books, brushes etc. We are all very much looking forward to a return visit.
MAG recently held a competition for a painting representing Milford-on-Sea to appear as the banner to our website and facebook page. We were delighted at the response to this call and the members voted on some twenty pictures. The winner was Richard Wadley with his lovely scene of boats at anchor. He also won a years subscription to Milford Art Group.
We had a most informative demonstration from the very talented Max Hale this afternoon. He produced two pictures for us in the two hour time frame. The first of horses in willow charcoal where he stressed the importance of drawing skills and of the use of proper artist fixative and not hairspray! The second picture was of a small herd of cows by applying the pastel in a vertical linear method which allows the eye to pick up the rhythm of the application of the medium. A very large majority of us left determined to draw more often and to crack open the pastels and charcoal.
Many congratulations to our members Julia Ayers, Gillian Key, Janet Penny and Mary Williams for having work selected for the St Barbe Museum Open Exhibition 2019.
