Portrait Artist of the Year
Storyvault Films produces Portrait Artist Of The Year (PAOTY) and Landscape Artist Of The Year (LAOTY). Now in its 5th year the Artist of the Year series have become Sky Art’s highest rating programmes, earning a reputation as respected competitions in their own right and a refreshing contrast to most TV competition formats in that they are an uplifting celebration of artistic talent: we don’t cast for character but on the merit of entry submissions: a self-portrait for PAOTY and a landscape for LAOTY. The prize is a £10,000 commission to create a piece of work for a major British institution. Watching the work emerge on the canvas at the heats, and having the artists talk us through their process, is a rare treat and utterly compelling.
PAOTY heats are open to the public. Each year we film across six days in London’s Wallace Collection, where artists selected to take part have just four hours to paint the portrait of a famous sitter.
LAOTY heats are also open to the public. Artists taking part come to some of the National Trust’s most stunning locations. We also invite 50 wildcard artists per each of the 6 heat days to attend and have a stab at being picked to join the main competition artists.
